Every New Beginning is Some Other Beginning's End

Nancy contacted me to talk with her 13 year old cat, Clovis.

Initially, it was going to be a conversation about how he was feeling physically. However, by the time his appointment came around, there was no question that Clovis was dying of intestinal cancer. 

Please don't stop reading this. 

When I first tuned into Clovis, he said, "Tell my mom that I love her and I'm sorry and I thought we'd have more time."

I called Nancy to see how his diagnosis was. He had been on steroids for two weeks, and his appetite was initially better, but had now fallen off again, and the normally fastidious cat was having accidents around the house.

This cat had only been sick for a few weeks. Clovis told me he was in a lot of pain, but was he ready to go?

I asked him, and he said, "I'm not ready to go. What will my mom do without me? She needs me. I can't go."

I told Nancy this, and she said, "It'd be selfish to make him stay since he's suffering so badly. You tell him that I'll miss him but I'll be okay."

I told Clovis this, and also that he was going to the other side where he wouldn't be in pain, and also that perhaps he could come back and of course, he'd be able to see and help Nancy after he passed away. 

I felt Clovis get peaceful. "Okay." he said. "As long as she's going to be okay."

I started crying at this point, because this sweet cat wasn't thinking about his pain at all.

Clovis and his mom had a few more hours together to say their goodbyes. She called me back to have me tell him that he'd be going to the vet to be put to sleep.  While we were on the phone, she said that whenever I was talking with him, his ears perked up like he was listening.  Then, as she and I talked, Clovis walked over to the cat carrier and stepped into it. 

Normally he hates the cat carrier. You can't get him near it. 

Later this afternoon, I received an email from Nancy. Here's a piece of it...

I wanted to tell you that Robin, (the pet sitter that took Clovis to the vet) said she has never ever seen an animal go so peacefully.  Clovis hates the car and the vet office, being in his carrier, you name it, he gets stressed very easy.  Today he never made a sound in the car or the vet's office, Robin said he just purred and rubbed on her as if to let her know he was ready.  She said that Clovis never flinched or fought and he passed away before the shot was even finished being injected.  He was so ready to let go after our conversation today.

The vast majority of my clients are like Nancy. They put their animals' well-being first. I love that aspect of my job! And even though it's sad to see Clovis go, it's an honor to help a sweet cat peacefully pass.

Bringing Billy Back

From time to time, we intuitive animal communicators trade with each other. When you can get a good read on your friend's pet, and your friend is a communicator too, it's incredibly edifying. 

So, when Janet Roper, an excellent communicator from Minneapolis asked me to talk with her cat, Billy, I was ready to help her out. 

Billy is a sensitive cat who gets frightened a lot. He's afraid to come down to his mom's music studio. He's a sweet, handsome grey tabby with a big heart. Janet asked me if I could facilitate some emotional healing. 

I've been working on a healing modality with my people clients. It resolves issues in the energetic body and creates lasting emotional changes. I thought I'd try it on Billy. 

Animals have chakras just like people. We have experiences and beliefs that impact our energetic system and when we're not feeling energetically whole, we behave in ways that aren't good for us. 

So, I worked through Billy's chakras, facilitating energetic healing. It's a technique that's similar to theta healing, but focused specifically on chakras. 

I also made him a custom floral essence blend with 26 floral essences to support his energetic health. 

Billy was so sweet. When I tuned in with him, he mentioned that he wanted to learn to not be afraid of children. Janet told me later that as a kitten, in a previous home, Billy had been severely abused by a child. Janet was touched that Billy was willing to work on that. Billy also wanted to get over his fear of dogs. A new dog, Max, was going to be joining their family. 

I talked with Billy again a few weeks later. He felt so strong. He had made some major steps in becoming more brave, meeting the new dog, coming downstairs. Janet said that everyday she watched him decide whether he was going to take another step in his courage. Over the time, day by day, he was slowly leaving his demons behind. 

Janet asked me to tell him  that she thought Billy had been extraordinarily brave and intelligent in the way he had gone about meeting the new dog. 

Billy said “I just put it in my head that I was going to get through this. I am keeping my wits about me.“ 

The important thing to understand is that Billy was ready to not be afraid anymore. He did the work. My work with him was supportive, facilitating healing. It was his intentions that drove my work. It was his force that healed him. I'm really happy that I could help. 

I'm looking forward to offering this healing modality on a case-by-case basis to other pets, and to offer custom floral essence blends as well.

Sebastian Redecorates

From time to time, I come across kitties that want to redecorate. They are nearly always male, and nearly always a wee bit snarky. 

Sebastian is one of these fine fellows. He knocks over his mom's stuff all the time. 

This is Sebastian with his buddy, Oskar. 

I asked Sebastian about the knocking over of stuff. 

I said, "Sebastian, why do you knock things over?"

He showed me a couple of cylinders. I thought maybe they were pillars of some kind, like very modern pillars that you could put a candle on top. It turns out they were cylindrical containers that Caroline uses to store binder clips and push pins. 

He said, "I don't like these. They should be in larger groupings, and in odd numbers."

 He showed me a cluster of 5 or so pillars standing together. They did look quite stylish. 

Caroline laughed when she heard this. She said that she always thought her cat was giving her interior decorating advice. 

I wonder if there's a market for cats like this, and also, I wonder if this is why my cat knocks jewelry off my dresser! 

Trixie's Not Sure What to Make of the Other Side

Trixie is a Southern Belle of a cat, the beloved kitty of Melissa. 

Melissa made the difficult decision to put her to sleep. Melissa called me. She missed her so much. Could I make sure that Trixie was all right?

Most pets cross over without a problem, but Trixie didn't.  Trixie didn't want to leave Melissa. She felt that Melissa needed her. Trixie was deeply anxious.

When pets have passed away, if they choose to not cross over, they are in a deeply anxious state, and their owners feel it. These are the owners that say, "I don't know why, but I'm not getting over this." or "I'm so sad. I didn't expect to be this upset."

This is not to say that it's abnormal to deeply grieve a pet. To be an owner of a pet that hasn't crossed over is to feel a deep state of anxiety, not just a deep sense of loss.

It's very rare, though, to encounter a pet that hasn't crossed over. 

Trixie hadn't. She didn't want to leave Melissa. Melissa needed her. She didn't want to leave.

I told Trixie that she could come back, in spirit, and help Melissa once she crossed over.  Trixie said, "Okay, I'm just going to say goodbye."

I emailed Melissa to let her know that Trixie hadn't passed over. Melissa said that she had a dream that she was fat and full and happy. This was healing for Melissa. 

Trixie on the Other Side

So, I checked in with Trixie a few days later. Most pets, on the other side, are filled with joy. Their spirits are light. Trixie didn't feel that way. She felt, well, crabby. 

I said, "You crossed over, right?"

She said, "Yes."  

I said, "Okay. What are you up to?"

She showed me a cottage with a passel of little old ladies playing cards. There was some light classical music playing. Trixie sat on an antique table. 

This, too, is VERY DIFFERENT, than the typical cat experience (which is full of cats and catching things, and being outside in beautiful weather). 

Trixie said, "My helper said that when I want, I can stop having a owner, but I'm not ready. I need an owner." 

I showed her how to visit Melissa on earth. She was afraid to jump down. I've never felt fear with a pet that's crossed over. Trixie seemed so alienated. 

So, I've been working with this modality called "Theta Healing". I go up to talk with God, and ask him to heal whomever I'm working with. It requires some deep meditation, but I am happy that I can do it. 

I went up to talk with God. I said, "God, Trixie needs help." 

God said, "Yes, she does. That's why I sent her to you."

I burst into tears. 

Please understand. I don't mean to say this in a conceited way. I mean to say that it is hard for me sometimes to believe that there is a plan or that there is a destiny or that we are called to do what we do.  It's hard for me sometimes to even believe that there is a God, although I talk with this benevolent spirit often. 

So to hear, "Yes, she does. That's why I sent her to you." was to feel a puzzle piece click into place. 

God said, "You need to tell Trixie that she can do whatever she wants. She doesn't understand this." 

Ah! Okay. I can do that. 

So, I went to Trixie and said, "Hey, you can do whatever you want." 

I showed her a few things that I thought she'd like. I showed her that she could grow herself up to 60 feet tall, or she could imagine and create bowl after bowl of food. I showed her that she could chase and catch things. I showed her that she could go to Melissa. 

It dawned on her that she could really do anything. Anything. Really. 

"I want to go to Melissa," she said. She was excited. 

I said, "Okay. You know how to step down."

"Yes," she said. "I do." 

And there she went. 

Reading of the Week: Coney's Reincarnation

Millie contacted me to see if her passed away cat had reincarnated into her new kitten.

I get asked this a lot, and most of the time, the answer is No. My experience has been that only about 10% of the time does a pet come back into the same lifetime as his owner. 

With Millie, I especially expected a No. It takes time for a pet to reincarnate. Millie's cat, Coney had passed away not long before she had adopted Achilles.

When I tuned in, I realized that the Coney I was talking to was in physical form. He didn't feel ethereal. He was here. That was a great sign. 

I asked, "Coney, are you Achilles?" 

"Yes." 

I was surprised! 

I asked, "How did you get here so fast?"

He said, "I would leave my body during my sleep and go home and prepare for my next life." 

I asked, "How long have you been here?"

He said, "About a month. There was a placeholder here before."  A placeholder is exactly what it sounds like, a soul that saves your place. 

So, here's the part that's hard to explain and harder still to deal with. A soul in a new body may act slightly different than the previous pet. The body is genetically predisposed to different hormone levels, different stress responses. The soul comes through in the personality, but the pet is different.  

I talked with Achilles. He had no memory of his life as Coney. He is just a little kitty with a new home. 

It was strange to talk with Coney at the soul level and Achilles at the body level. I imagine in a month or two, they will be fully merged, and one and the same. 

Animals on the other side don't always get to choose whether and where they are coming back. It has to be inline with their life's purpose and with their owner's life purpose. 

Coney, in a new body, has a new purpose in Millie's life. He said, "I'm here to teach about the beauty of power without apology."  Women, especially have a tendency to apologize or accommodate around their power. 

We say, "Oh, it's nothing." or "You're good at this, too."  It sounds like Millie has some serious power to wield! 

Coney had a beautiful striped coat. Millie was surprised to notice that in certain light, Achilles has a black on black tabby pattern in his fur as well.  It will be interesting to see what parts of Coney shine through. 

Reading of the Week: Matilda the Wise

Barb used to have a cat named Matilda. Matilda had died some years back, and Barb never felt quite right about how she had died. Barb wanted me to contact Matilda. She wanted closure and to express her regrets for not helping Matilda pass away better.

This is a common theme. Everybody wishes for a good end for their pet, and if it doesn't come out right, people feel bad, even if they aren't responsible for the bad end. If you are carrying this around right now, know that your pet, in heaven, has forgotten their death, and is way more interested in what you're doing right now. 

When I looked at Matilda's picture, I knew I was in for an interesting conversation. Imagine a forthright little cat with eyes that go right through you.

I reached out to Matilda. I felt like my little message to her was going higher and higher into the heavens, climbing up and up until it reached her.

Then I heard a voice say, "Why are you bothering me? I have important work to do!"

She wasn't angry, but she was fierce! 

I could see a temple door behind Matilda, and clouds around our feet. We were in the rarified air of the spiritual masters. 

I said, "I'm here with Barb."

Matilda softened, "Oh, Barb's with you? How is she?"  Matilda turned warm and purred. 

"She's good. She feels sorry for how you passed away."

"She feels sorry for that? It was fine. It was my time." 

I told Barb that Matilda was okay with how she passed. 

"You need to tell Barb something." Matilda said, (I knew this was coming. I knew what she was going to say next. When people are blessed with a spiritual master in animal form, it's because they're going to do something that's deeply important). 

"Okay," I said. 

"I was with her to help her become more disciplined. She needs to understand the importance of routine. She has a lot of good work ahead of her, and it was important that I teach her. She needs to understand that she shouldn't feel small." 

I told Barb this information and she said, "She was disciplined. She got me out of bed early to feed her. Everything she did was with purpose." 

We talked a little more, the three of us. Barb cried. I cried. Matilda was her fine, fierce little self. She couldn't stay for long. Spiritual duties called. 

Look at your animal friend. Is there a spiritual master in there? Regardless, what is your pet here to teach you about? What is your purpose, and how can your pet help you live it? That's the question I want to know. 

Bootsy messes with my students...

Bootsy likes to talk with my students. She really enjoyed meeting Chelsea, on Sunday. She showed me how she'd lick Chelsea's face if they were in the same room.

Each of the cats is quite social and funny, but I never expected Bootsy to play a little trick on my students Tuesday evening.

I asked two of my students to connect with Bootsy. I had to wake Bootsy up to talk with them. She had agreed before that she was willing to talk with my students Tuesday evening, but this little girl likes to nap. 

They asked her first, "Where do you live?" She said to each of them, "In a big house with lots of windows." 

Our house is big by any cat's standards, and the whole back of the house is nearly all windows. 

Gini and Heather were surprised and excited that they got the same exact answer. So was I! This was their second attempt at talking with animals in my class. 

The next question was "Show me an animal friend." Usually Bootsy will show one of the dogs, or sometimes her on-again off-again kitty buddy Leo. 

Gini reported, "She's showing me a red squirrel in a tree."

Heather said, "That's so weird! That's what I'm getting too!"  

I tuned into Bootsy. "Bootsy? Why are you showing them a squirrel as your friend?"

Bootsy laughed. "They were so excited that they got the same answer before, I thought I'd send them something funny. Of course, I don't have any squirrel friends!" 

"And by the way," Bootsy added. "Could you not have your class run so late at night? I have to get up in a few hours." 

Cats. 

Training Tuesday- Using the right energy to catch your pet

In the book, The River Why, a man hooks a salmon with a 3 lb. test line. This is light enough to break with any resistance. He follows this salmon all night feeling the energy of the salmon through this tenuous filament. The salmon gets used to his presence, so used to it that he can enter the water and pick it up, should he choose. For the man, it is a spiritual experience.

I've had spiritual experiences with my horse, following him around the pasture, looping left and right as he turns and faces, and stops and decides whether I can come closer or whether I'm just fine right there. 

Mostly I can walk up, touch his shoulder, say hello, groom at liberty. This all changes when the farrier comes. Ed likes his farrier. She's kind and gentle and pretty quick. But Ed is not a fan of the pedicure. And thus, our game of catch is far more difficult.

The energy technique that I use to catch Ed is also good for catching any pet who needs grooming or medicine. 

The first thing that's important is this mindset: you have all day. If there is any outside chance that you will give up on catching your pet, you've already lost. A smart pet will wait you out. 

Secondly, Don't over-identify with your pet's potential discomfort. If you think, "Oh my poor baby needs to get a shot today!", your cat will not come out from under the bed. Instead, think, "This is a necessary part of life, and it's going to be okay." (Because it is and it is). 

Third, approach your pet in a way that doesn't signify you're a predator. Pet brains will always pick up on predator behavior. For horses, this means that I can't walk straight up to Ed. Instead, I walk in curves, s-shapes. I walk with gentle determination. 

I feel for Ed's energy. I get him just to the point where he's going to take off, and then I stop and back off. When his energy dies down, I take a step closer, and wait. Slowly, we get to the point where he's comfortable with me touching his shoulder, and neck. Then he's ready to be haltered. 

For cats and dogs, I usually walk into the room that they're in, shut the door and sit down. They approach and as soon as they get close enough, I pick them up. If they're not coming close to me, I settle in a few feet away. 

Again, it's important to keep a gentle and loving, but determined mindset. 

Also, do not hurry. Hurrying creates urgency which creates a sense of panic. Every healthy creature avoids panic. 

I know that as soon as I post this, someone is going to ask, "Hey, how does this work with my dog at the park?" 

Getting your dog to come to you at the park is a combination of last week's Tuesday Training and this one. Your dog has to know to pay attention to you first. Again, if there is any chance in your head that they will get to stay and play, they're staying and playing. :)

Reading of the Week: Icky Come Home!

On Wednesday, I received an email from a client in Huntington Beach, California. Her cat, Icky, had gone missing. Could I help find Icky?

I tuned into Icky. Icky was okay, happy even. Icky was just stuck. She said she had climbed down into something and now she couldn't get out. 

I called Melanie, her owner. I told Melanie that Icky was stuck. Somebody was going to have to find her and get her unstuck. 

Did she know of any window wells or sewer grates around? Icky thought she was close by. Melanie lives in California. She didn't know of any window wells, and there was no way that the cat could have fallen down the sewer. 

. 

Icky spent her first night away from home. Melanie called for her the next morning, hung posters and talked with neighbors. No Icky. 

I contacted Icky again. Icky was still stuck. She was ready to come home now, the exciting adventure part was over. 

Melanie came home over her lunchbreak. She called for Icky and then called me to ask if Icky could hear her.

"Icky, can you hear your mom?" 

"Yes! yes I can hear her! She's behind me!" 

We puzzled at this. How could she be behind her? Where was Icky? I thought perhaps that Icky was stuck on a balcony. Melanie continued to look and call, to pester her neighbors.

I sent out an APB (all prayers bulletin) on Twitter. Could everybody please send good thoughts and prayers to get Icky home? Folks from all over the country prayed and meditated: Icky Come Home!

On Thursday night, it rained hard. Melanie asked me to contact Icky, worried about her cat being stuck in the rain. Icky said that she was dry but very thirsty. Could somebody please find her? I told her we were trying. 

I tried reaching Icky Friday morning. At first, all I got was a grey mist. No Icky. Melanie was in a near panic. Then I grounded myself and tried again. Icky was still stuck. Icky was tired. Icky wanted to come home. 

I know Melanie's sister, Alice. She's my Reiki teacher. Alice called me. A psychic friend of hers had intuited that Icky had died. She didn't want to tell her sister the bad news. Could I contact Icky again?

I reached out to Icky. 

"Icky?"

"Yes?"

"You alive?"

"Yep. I'm unstuck. I'm coming home."

I told Alice that Icky was alive. That she was unstuck and that I thought she was trying to get home. 

15 minutes later, I got an email from Alice. Icky was alive and home! 

You will never guess where she was. 

Icky had made her way into the neighbor's apartment, and had gotten herself stuck in the neighbor's bed's boxspring. Her neighbor found her! 

This morning, I talked with Icky a bit about it. She thought the boxspring smelled like mice. So she squeezed in it. No mice, and then she couldn't quite squeeze back out.

Remember, if your cat gets lost: the best way to get your cat home is to tell everybody that your cat is missing. Put up posters. Check the shelters. And if your cat is named Icky, check your neighbor's boxsprings.
